Political scientist John Mearsheimer delivered a stark warning at the European Parliament, blaming NATO expansion and Western liberal hegemony for pushing Europe into a prolonged and dangerous confrontation with Russia. In a hard realist assessment, he argued that Ukraine should seek a negotiated settlement with Moscow, even at the cost of territory, to avoid further devastation. Mearsheimer predicted the conflict would likely freeze into a long-term standoff, damaging European security, economy and autonomy, while exposing what he called the West’s strategic delusions and inability to adapt to a new multipolar world order.
